How Often to Replace Sports Bras

Is your sports bra so old you can’t remember when you bought it? Guilty. If you’re still wearing the same sports bra from years ago, it’s time for a new one. As you work out, the elasticity in your sports bra stretches more and more over time. So after a while, these bras you hold on to dearly are not giving you the support you need. And we all know, as soon as we get moving our breasts do the same. Lack of support can interfere with your workout but more importantly lead to discomfort, pain and sagging - so you’re going to need proper support.

Question is, how often do we need to replace sports bras? Well, it depends on the frequency and intensity of your workout. If you’re working out regularly, say more than 3 times a week about an hour a session, you should replace your sports bra every 6 months. But, if you’re training for a marathon (washing and wearing more than average), you should replace it every 3 months. Check for wear and tear, if it’s stretched out, or if you’re experiencing more breast bounce during work outs: these are all signs that it’s time for a replacement.

So, the more you work it, the sooner you’ll replace it. Now, I hope this is not discouraging ladies – you can think of it as a motivation: the harder you work, the closer you are to a new addition to your wardrobe (I like to call this retail therapy), and after all you deserve it…

Tips to Make Sports Bras Last Longer:
1. Rinse with cold water after every use - get rid of the sweat so it doesn't damage the fabric
2. Hand wash in cold water with detergent every 2 or 3 wears, depending on intensity of your workout
3. If you prefer machine washing, use a lingerie bag
4. Avoid using fabric softeners and bleach (harsh chemicals can ruin the material and accelerate stretching)
5. Hang dry or use dryer on a cool setting (heat ruins the elastic)

Prevention is better than cure… When exercising, adequate support is critical, even in the smaller cups. Whatever your cup size, your breasts will bounce around during a workout more than you might expect: not just up and down, but also back and forth, left to right. You don’t want the long lasting effects of insufficient support.
